Coupons Inc., the company behind Coupons.com launched their BrandCaster product today. I was actually in their Mountain View office a couple weeks ago and saw a demonstration by CEO Steven Boal. I’m a big fan of web based coupon strategy so I was excited to see it.

E&P did a nice piece on it today but here are my thoughts-

  • Contextual based coupons are the wave of the future and BrandCaster provides Publishers the ability to place SAU sized coupon spaces anywhere on their site. Because BrandCaster is an intelligent ad delivery system, taking into account the content on the page and the reader’s habits it will provide to a relevant delivery of major advertising brands and deals.
  • The most annoying thing about AdSense and most online advertising is the need to click away from the content page to finish the transaction. Brandcaster provides the ability to print one or multiple coupons right from the ad unit itself, without leaving your content page. Basically, the user can choose the coupon(s) they want, click print and continue reading or browsing the site they are on. The coupons are on the printer waiting for them.
  • In early testing Brandcaster outperformed AdSense which could provide a growing revenue stream for their partners. I’ll get better detail on the results as more partners begin to use the ads.

Here is an excerpt from the E&P story that sheds some light on their plans-

To start, Brandcaster will distribute coupons from about 200 brands to about 3,000 Web sites. The advertisers sending their coupons through Brandcaster include General Mills Inc., Kimberly-Clark Corp., Kraft Foods Inc. and Clorox Co. Within a year, Boal hopes to have 35,000 Web sites showing coupons through Brandcaster.
